For Josh Bissell, songwriting did not begin with confidence. It began with struggle.
For years, creativity felt like an internal battle. Josh wrestled with self doubt and the belief that creativity belonged to a select few. He loved music, felt drawn to songwriting, but never fully identified as a creative. That disconnect kept him on the outside of his own calling.
Everything shifted when his understanding of creativity changed.
Drawing from the book of Genesis, Josh began to explore what it means to be created in the image of God. A God who creates worlds, life, beauty, and order. Through that lens, creativity was no longer something to earn. It was something already given.
Because God is creative, and humanity is made in His image, creativity is part of our identity.
That realization unlocked the creative process for Josh. Instead of trying to prove he was creative through his art, he began creating from a place of identity. Songs started to flow not from pressure, but from purpose.
Music Rooted in Real Life and Real Hope
Josh Bissell’s music lives in the space between honesty and hope.
His songs reflect the human experience in its fullness. Struggles, heartache, joy, triumph, and unanswered questions are not avoided. They are acknowledged. Yet every song points back to the hope found in Jesus Christ.
Josh draws inspiration from John 10:10, where Jesus says He came to give life and give it abundantly. For Josh, that abundance is not limited to eternity. It is available in the present, even in the middle of trials.
His music invites listeners to do life with God. Not a polished or perfect life, but a real one. A life where faith walks alongside grief, joy, uncertainty, and growth.
A Lifelong Calling Clarified
Music has always been woven into Josh’s story. Raised in a musical household with a mother who played piano and a father who played drums, music and worship were constants. Choirs, church music, and singing were simply part of life.
Yet it was not until a few years ago that Josh truly wrestled with whether music was his calling.
There was a season where he questioned if he was meant to continue making music at all. But in that wrestling, he felt the Lord gently urging him to write songs. In worship, he sensed the presence of God in a way that could not be ignored.
That clarity confirmed what had been there all along. Music was not just something Josh did. It was something he was called to steward.
Creativity for Every Believer
Josh believes creativity is not limited to musicians or artists.
Because God is creative, everyone He creates carries creativity within them. Whether expressed through music, numbers, parenting, leadership, or daily faithfulness, creativity becomes an act of worship when offered to God.
His message is simple and powerful. Whatever God is stirring in your heart, you can pursue it with Him. Creativity is not about performance. It is about obedience, identity, and walking closely with the Creator.
